Staff announcement: Workforce Development & Community Programs

A message from David Atherton, Dean, Academic and Liberal Studies and Rebecca Nicholls, Associate Dean, Workforce Development and Community Programs:

Workforce Development and Community Programs is pleased to welcome Shanyn Porter to our team as the Community Access Programs Manager.

Shanyn has extensive experience working at Niagara College in different capacities since joining as an employee in 2011. She is also a proud Alumni of NC, graduating in 1999 in the Social Service Worker program. Shanyn started her career at Niagara College as a Psychology and Sociology Instructor in the Aboriginal Child Development Practitioner – Pre Apprenticeship program. This was followed by becoming Pre-Apprenticeship Programs Coordinator for several years. In 2019, Shanyn was moved into a manager role to oversee various community partnership projects such as the Career Insights, Hybrid-Electric Vehicle and Cannabis 101 projects. More recently, she has also lead Indigenous-specific programs such as Journey to Success and MPOWER (My Path of Worthwhile Educational Re-engagement) in direct partnership with the Indigenous organization NPAAMB for the last four years. Shanyn has never strayed far from the classroom, continuing to teach Sociology courses for School College Work/Dual Credit programs and Self Development and Communication courses for Pre-Apprenticeship and Indigenous-focused programs.

Prior to joining NC, Shanyn was a Community Resource Program Manager at Port CARES in Port Colborne and a Family Support Worker at FACS Niagara.

In addition to her various experience, Shanyn holds both a BA in Sociology and a BEd from Brock University. She is currently working toward her Master of Education in Education for Change, Indigenous Studies, Graduate degree through Lakehead University.
