Niagara College, in collaboration with the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC), established a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force in 2020 to support the College’s commitment to creating a more inclusive, diverse, culturally, and globally engaged college community.
Members of the Task Force included both NC students and employees. They worked together to research and write a Draft Framework for Consultation that identifies a vision, guiding principles, and strategic priorities for inclusion and diversity. This Draft Framework for Consultation was presented to NCSAC President Samantha Jemison and NC’s Executive Team in the summer of 2021 and their feedback was gathered. In coming months, the updated draft will be shared and consultations undertaken to ensure that the final framework aligns with and reflects the voice of NC community members.
The Taskforce will continue its work later this fall, building off the foundation created to date, and providing advice on the consultation process happening in the winter and spring of 2022. By the summer of 2022, a blueprint to guide diversity and inclusion initiatives at the College will be completed.
Who is needed?
We need students from diverse backgrounds with a broad range of perspectives and lived experiences to ensure this important work is completed in a manner that reflects our college community. This includes diversity of race, colour, ancestry, creed and religion, place of origin, ethnic origin, citizenship, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, family or marital status, ability, and socio-economic background. We welcome nominations from typically marginalized and underrepresented groups.
We are looking for the following members to support this important work:
Student Task Force Members
There are opportunities for five (5) students to join the Taskforce. Their work will include research, advisement on consultations with staff and students, dialogue, and discussion sessions, visioning and writing. Each member will need to commit approximately two hours every two weeks (4 hours per month).
These five positions are vacancies on the Taskforce, formerly held by students whose studies have ended or who were unable to continue in their roles.
The Task Force will begin its work in the latter part of the Fall 2021 Term and will wrap up in spring 2022.
How do I get involved?
We encourage self-nominations from students of all backgrounds, including people who identify as allies, who share a commitment to values of equity, inclusion, and diversity, and who are motivated to bring these values to life at the College.
Interested candidates can complete the nomination here by Wednesday, November 24 at 4:00 p.m.
All nominations will be considered by the Nomination Committee and recommended to Niagara College President Sean Kennedy and SAC President Samantha Jemison.
Each nominee will be contacted by December 10, 2021.
