Niagara College is set to share its best practices on the topic of sustainability with its partners in Scotland this month.
The College recently signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with New College Lanarkshire (NCL) located in Scotland, United Kingdom. The partnership between NC and New College Lanarkshire will allow students, faculty and staff the opportunity to benefit from best practices in both Scotland and Canada’s applied education systems.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), NC and NCL are exploring potential collaborations on a joint initiative for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021.
“As higher educational institutions we have the potential for transformative change by educating and engaging our students today, regardless of their field of study, to be more sustainably minded as they transition into their future careers,” NC Sustainability advisor, Taryn Wilkinson. “Whether students are in a culinary program, an automotive program, or an environmental program, we want to prepare our students to understand and see how their future careers and lives can and will be affected by climate change and broader sustainability impacts, and provide them with some basic knowledge and tools to succeed.”
As part of this first project, Wilkinson will be presenting to NCL’s Executive Board and NC’s leadership and sustainability teams on April 27 to aid partnership explorations.
“I have been with the College for ten years, and opportunities like this presentation and working with new international partners allow us to share the NC sustainability story – highlighting our successes as well as the lessons learned from our challenges,” shared Wilkinson. “Although we may be at different stages of our sustainability journeys, the relationships we build with our partners facilitate that best practices sharing to ensure we are always learning, growing, and enriching our approach to sustainability across the college in all areas, operations and services as well as academics.”
NC and NCL look forward to continuing to explore a number of collaborative opportunities over the next three years.
As Canada’s global college, NC has many partnerships around the world and New College Lanarkshire is one of the latest partners to join this global network.
