As the majority of NC staff and faculty continue to work remotely as we head into the Winter Term, virtual engagement will remain an important part of our daily working lives. Whether connecting for a scheduled video meeting or a quick video call, videoconferencing platforms including Microsoft Teams and Zoom have allowed our college community to stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we continue to utilize these platforms to connect with colleagues and students, there are several ways to enhance our communication when using these tools.
Turn your camera “on” during meetings for the best experience
When connecting with colleagues, or members outside of the NC community, it is beneficial to turn your camera “on” to enhance the virtual experience during a video meeting. Turning your camera on allows for improved communication by providing the visual cues normally achieved through face-to-face interaction and helps maintain social connections.
NC virtual backgrounds are available to you
A suite of NC branded backgrounds has been designed by our Marketing department to provide employees with options for achieving a professional backdrop that is work appropriate. The virtual backgrounds, although optional for employees, are especially helpful for video meetings with external partners and for those who would prefer to maintain the privacy of their remote office.

ITS has provided step-by-step instructions for changing your background image when using Microsoft Teams and Zoom – both platforms also include their own selection of virtual backgrounds and filters for your use.

Remember these important tips
When participating in a video meeting, it is also important to approach the experience in a professional manner, just as you would for an in-person meeting on campus. Before you engage in your next videoconference, consider the following etiquette tips:
- Log in a few minutes early. This will give you a chance to resolve any technical problems and engage in some small talk with colleagues, like you would do upon entering a meeting room on campus.
- Adjust your camera/work setup. Ideally, your monitor should be at arm’s length or slightly closer, with your main light source in front of you. Windows behind you may require blinds to be closed especially on a bright day.
- Mute your microphone. Muting your microphone when you’re not speaking will reduce background noise or feedback/echo and allow other participants to share their thoughts uninterrupted.
