In this Niagara This Week/Fort Erie Post article, Richard Hutton writes about Greater Fort Erie Secondary Shool’s Hospitality and Tourism High Skills Major program and Niagara College receives a mention from NC alumnus Afshin Keyvani (Culinary Management, 1990 and Hospitality Management – Hotel & Restaurant, 1996).
Keyvani is a chef teacher at the high school whose students have had to adapt to several changes in the program due to COVID-19. While new protocols, including attending school as part of two different cohorts, practising physical distancing, and wearing masks, and the closure of the school’s Pomegranate Restaurant have changed the student experience, Keyvani speaks to the positives of the situation. Keyvani mentions how smaller and longer classes have benefitted students and notes:
“In four hours, there are so many elements in the teaching,” he said. “It really reminds me of when I was in college at Niagara College. We’re doing things more thoroughly, there’s a lot more hands-on work. It is, in one sense, really good that they’ve been able to get the attention.”
