For the second year in a row, NC is putting together a team in Niagara Health Foundation’s Big Move Cancer Ride to support the Walker Family Cancer Centre.

This year, the annual ride is being held over a 13-day period from September 1 to 13, 2020, where riders, supporters, survivors, families and friends, will join in ‘virtually’ to complete a 12K (family ride), 25K, 50K, 75K (or more) at their own pace and at their preferred times. Participants can choose their own routes, tracking their kilometres, or select from existing routes provided by the event organizers.

All the funds raised through the Big Move stay in Niagara, making it possible for more than 2,500 Niagara residents diagnosed each year to receive a full spectrum of cancer services. Since 2009, over $3.7 million has been raised.

Staff and faculty of all cycling levels are encouraged to join NC’s Big Move team. Before joining, there are a few things to note:

  • Event registration costs $30 per person
  • When registering, use the following link to join through the NC team: ofnhs.akaraisin.com/ui/BigMove2020/team/304187
  • The team’s goal is to continue its support of the Walker Family Cancer Centre by raising whatever funds possible and to get active and stay positive.
  • A Microsoft Teams group will be created for participants to provide support through training and event updates and encouraging people to stay fit, have fun and fundraise, while generating NC team spirit and camaraderie.
  • The team will follow health guidelines as stipulated by Niagara Health and follow Niagara College COVID-19 safety protocols when riding together as a group.

Group rides

  • NC team member Mike Pasquale will lead two 50km group rides for anyone who wishes to join him on September 6 and September 13, 2020.
  • The rides will start from the Rockway Community Centre in St. Catharines at 9 a.m. and will follow the Big Move’s 50km route, although riders can choose to do a shorter or longer route from this starting point. All routes can be found on the Big Move website here.
  • This does not necessarily mean whoever meets will ride together – it will be a chance for the team to welcome one another and offer best wishes for a good, safe ride.
  • Riders can coordinate alternate dates/times with other participants or with friends/family and should have copies of the routes with them to stay safe and stay on course. Everyone can go at their own pace, and if necessary, modify the route based on weather, cycling ability, fatigue, etc.
  • Riders are also encouraged to take their own photos before and after the ride to share with the team in celebration of your commitment.

In 2019, over 40 NC staff and faculty mounted their bikes and pedaled in blue for the first time as a team, making history as the largest team in the Big Move’s history and raising over $8,500.
