On the Nov. 27 CHCH News broadcast at 6 p.m., a segment from Niagara College’s Welland Campus was aired, showcasing the Faceless Dolls workshop in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Lisa Heffner speaks with NC alumna Emily Kudluk who came back to participate in the activity, which seeks to put a face and give an identity to the many Indigenous women who have gone missing in this country. Heffner explains that while Indigenous women make up 5% of the country’s population, they make up a staggering 22% of all murder victims.
Crystal Adams Coons, professor in the School of Academic & Liberal Studies, explains that we have a long way to go towards reconciliation, but that events like these raise awareness among students, particularly international students who are new to Canada and are learning about the history of colonialism and Indigenous peoples.
The Faceless Dolls workshop is brought to NC by former student Alkie Babe Froman, and coordinated with the help of the School of Academic & Liberal Studies.
