NC’s Shari Walsh, associate director, Student Engagement, Academic Advising and Career Services, and Maxine Semple, manager, Global and cultural Engagement were recognized as Accelerate Civic Leadership (ACL) Leaders in Focus by Leadership Niagara.
The ACL program “encourages civic leadership and positive change within the Niagara region by developing the capabilities of aspiring leaders who care about the community; who understand its strengths and weaknesses, and who are willing to make a personal investment to improve the community’s quality of life.”
The piece outlines Walsh’s background as an educator in higher education for the past 12 years in two provinces and abroad, her education from both Michigan State University (master’s degree) and Trent University (bachelor’s degree), and her origins in Chippawa, Ontario.
Walsh weighs in on a series of questions on leadership, from the most important attribute of a leader, how she defines civic leadership, her motivation to explore civic leadership, and finally the most significant issue/opportunity facing Niagara.

Semple is described as an “experienced trainer, influencer, project manager, and relationship builder.” Semple has over eight years of experience in global education and development and is commended for her cross-cultural competence and passion for student engagement at NC.
She is an NC graduate from the International Commerce & Global Development program, and holds a Masters of Education in Adult Learning and Global Change from the University of British Columbia. Semple has worked in postsecondary in Ontario and Nova Scotia, as well as having experience living and working abroad.
