In this piece by Kris Dubé in The Welland Tribune, the Welland Town and Gown committee – which includes representation from Niagara College – were commended for initiatives to help students become good neighbors in the community.

Lianne Gagnon, director of student services at NC sits on committees in four municipalities – Welland, St. Catharines, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Thorold – that are home to many college students. Through education and support programs, the committee (driven by local residents) has improved issues relating to parking, noise, lawn care and garbage and recycling among students.

Resident and member of the Welland Town and Gown Committee, Tara Woronchuk, says that the situation has improved over the last six years. Some of the collaborative efforts have included a customized “good neighbour guide,” advice on tenant rights and responsibilities, and free garbage bags and ties provided by NC when students are moving out.

The Town and Gown Committee is a shining example of the level of community support for the College.
