The St. Catharines Standard shared the news about Niagara College Knights hall of famer Mike Hurley winning Ontario Basketball Association’s coach of the year award. Hurley is the facilities coordinator in NC’s Athletics and Recreation department.
To Hurley, his approach to coaching doesn’t focus on wins and losses, rather the process. He says, “Winning and losing is an outcome. Process is what matters,” the 44-year-old father of two from Pelham says. “Learning how to do things the right way. Discipline. Structure. Skill acquisition.”
Hurley describes himself as a “basketball nerd,” picking up basketball after moving to Pelham from Brantford. Basketball has been part of his life ever since. He went on to play for the NC Knights and serve as coach on the Knight’s men’s basketball team for 12 years. Presently, Hurley coaches the Pelham Panthers.
NC’s Michele O’Keefe, associate director, Athletics and Recreation, is quoted: “This is a great honour for Mike Hurley, a true testament to his commitment to basketball development. Mike is being recognized as one of two coaches of the year our of 2,800 basketball coaches in Ontario. The Pelham Panthers, the Niagara peninsula and Niagara College is fortunate to have someone so devoted to our young athletes.”
