Niagara College’s Student Administrative Council joined with the rest of the college community and Pride Niagara to celebrate their joint support for the LGBTQ2+ community during Pride Month on June 3, as rainbow flags were hoisted for the first time at both campuses.
The event was organized through NCSAC, who took a leadership role in showing the student body’s support. “The Niagara College Student Administrative Council believe it is imperative to foster an unrestricted awareness of inclusivity and to support all individuals and communities at Niagara College,” said NCSAC President Tom Price. “Our first annual raising of the rainbow flag is emblematic of our emphasized support for our LGBTQ2+ student community.”
NCSAC as a whole, and NCSAC director Lindsay McCormick, have both been nominated for two awards at the 2019 Niagara Unity Awards, held in late June and hosted by Pride Niagara.
Niagara College president Dan Patterson and other NC staff, faculty and students enjoyed cupcakes and conversation as the flag rose at the Welland Campus.”As a college, we’re committed to offering a safe, inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds,” said Patterson. “This is a commitment we’ve made in our 2017-2021 Strategic Plan, and I’m thrilled to see the college community put this into practice through our Student Administrative Council.”
The Welland Campus ceremony was also held with the support of Pride Niagara, who added NC as a stop on its rolling tour of flag-raising events across Niagara on June 3. “Pride Niagara is thrilled to partner with Niagara College, adding even more diversity and community to the celebration of our LGBT+ history and heritage,” said Enzo DeDevitiis, chairperson of Pride Niagara’s Board of Directors.
