On March 2, staff and students of NC’s Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film program watched proudly as their film for the 2021 Canada Summer Games aired on TSN from the 2019 Canada Winter Games closing ceremony in Red Deer, Alberta .
Having been involved in the 2021 Canada Summer Games since the Niagara region won the bid in March 2017, Broadcasting professor Peter ‘Dutch’ VandenBerg gathered a team of five NC Broadcasting students to edit together a video welcoming the Canada Summer Games and its athletes to the Niagara region in 2021.
The editing team, consisting of third-year Broadcasting students Jon Kitiwano, Matt Aubin, Carter Varmeyer, Tommy Bowden and Kylie Laus, worked on the video for two months.
“There were numerous revisions and versions of the video but the final approved version that aired was something we were very proud of,” said VandenBerg. “It was a long journey but we got there and I believe represented the Niagara region and the College as I had hoped.”
While the project was a challenging undertaking, the students were eager to apply their skills to gain real-word experience on a national level.
“I just had the privilege of witnessing a project I’ve spent the better part of two months working on air live on TSN,” said Aubin. “My resume has tripled since I started here, from college tournaments to international events and special projects like this one.”
“This is the reason I went to college and chose Niagara, to gain the knowledge and experience only projects like these can give.”
“I was ridiculously proud during the closing ceremony rehearsals Saturday morning when the video was first tested – but the evening itself was electric,” said VandenBerg. “I was proud of my students, our College and privileged to represent the Niagara 2021 Games. The College logo in the video was the icing on the cake.”
The 2021 Canada Summer Games video will soon be available on the Niagara College YouTube channel.
