This March, Dental Assisting students are giving the NC community a reason to smile with Dental Assistant Recognition Week.
On March 13, 60 Dental Assisting students will be answering students’ oral hygiene questions and demonstrating their knowledge at their Dental Assistant Recognition Week celebration in the Applied Health Institute foyer at the Welland campus from 1:30-3:30 p.m. This year marks the largest Dental Assisting class in Niagara College history.
“The main goal is to educate the public on oral hygiene issues and everyday care, from basic oral hygiene to stain to time management to protecting their teeth,” said Jennifer Karnay, placement coordinator and part-time faculty member for the College’s Dental programs.
Taking place over the first full week of March, DARW recognizes the versatile, multitalented dental assistants across Canada. Contributing to quality dental care, today’s dental assistants are role models of professional development. Educated in infection control protocols, exposing and processing radiographs, providing patient education, independently providing intra oral treatments and beyond, dental assistants are committed to their profession and patient health.
This year, NC is celebrating Dental Assistant Recognition Week by education students about ways to keep their smile sparkling all year long with presentations by Dental Assisting students, free samples, photo booths and door prizes. Students were assigned a topic on how they can help to educate the student population on oral health and how it can affect their overall health. Poster boards will be presented at the celebration.

Students will present poster boards on a variety of oral health topics including hygiene, staining and protection.
“I think it is important to hold events like the one we are holding on Wednesday because it involves the public in an eye-catching and exciting way,” said Dental Assisting student Phoebe Venditti. “This is a fun way for us to educate the public on dental assisting and oral health.”
While NC was unable to host the celebration during the designated week, students of the Dental Assisting program want to remind the College community that oral hygiene awareness is important every day.
