One NC professor experienced culture head on when two of his students offered to teach him how to tie a turban.
On Dec. 10, Prabhdeep and Shubhpreet Singh helped Liberal Arts professor André Roy tie a turban for the first time after Roy showed interest in their culture early in the semester.
“I was intrigued by the variety of colours of some of my Indian students. Asking if there was any significance to the colours, I was informed there was none,” said Roy. “This generated more questions and comments from students as everyone seemed interested in finding out more.”
Since the beginning of the fall semester, Prabhdeep and Shubhpreet would frequently offer to tie a turban on Roy.
“I was honoured by the offer but foolishly thought they were merely being polite,” said Roy.
When the offer still stood at the end of the semester, Roy accepted graciously. Surprised by the length of the three-metre turban, Roy was convinced that the students would be unable to fit the entire turban on top of his head.

“The laugh was on me as it turned out that they had to make two attempts because they came up a bit short on the first try,” said

Impressed with the result, Roy was grateful to have students willing to share their culture with him.
