Benchmark Restaurant’s Sophanna (‘Hank’) Man was recognized at the 2018 Niagara Grape and Wine Festival as a Rising Star in Niagara’s culinary field.

Presented at the festival’s RBC Reception on Sept. 21, the awards recognize top individuals currently pursing their education in the wine and culinary arts. The award acknowledges rising stars in their respective fields who embody the future of Niagara’s internationally recognized wine and culinary industries–one of the top employers in the region. The award brings with it a $1,000 scholarship for the student to continue their studies in Niagara.

Man graduated from the Culinary Management program and is currently working on his apprenticeship, pursuing his Red Seal certification. He  has worked in every station in the kitchen from dishwasher to saucier, and has been a go-to  support for every Benchmark event, regardless of the level of support needed; stepping in to assist with everything from uniform demonstration to new students, to large-scale College-wide events in the restaurant, and everything in between. He works tirelessly to improve himself and provide encouragement and support for his fellow team members.

“it’s kind of surreal – I just can’t explain the feeling of it. It’s nice to be recognized for the work I do,” said Man. “I love working with new students, helping them to learn and gain experience. especially in the kitchen, where you’re learning something new every day, it’s very rewarding.”

“Hank has been the epitome of what being a student employee at benchmark is all about. He started with some base experience in the industry, came to college with the hopes of increasing his knowledge and training, and when he decides he’s ready I know leaving as an apprentice he is ready for any position this industry can throw at him. He’s young, smart, and passionate, and has the skills to bring a team together. I’m proud to be training him and glad I had the chance to meet him,” said Benchmark chef manager Alex White.
