Cutathon raises more than $1,000 for College’s United Way Campaign

Hairstyling students give haircuts for $10 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus on Oct. 21 as part of their annual Cutathon for the United Way.

College Hairstyling students sharpened their skills and mastered the beauty of giving in October.

Their annual Cutathon raised more than $1,000 for the College’s United Way Campaign.  Eleven Hairstyling students and four faculty members volunteered for the event, held on October 14 at the Welland Campus and on Oct. 21 at the NOTL Campus. Volunteers gave haircuts for $10 donations to the campaign.

International students volunteered as well, offering temporary henna tattoos in exchange for donations.

“I feel it is important because it showcases our work but more importantly, it teaches the students to get involved and give back to the community,” said Joseph Abbruscato, coordinator. Hairstyling Techniques and Apprenticeship. “Our students not only get volunteer hours but hopefully feel a sense of pride and accomplishment at the end of the day.”

He noted that the United Way Campaign is a worthy cause because it supports a number of local charities.

“I strongly feel it’s a win-win for everyone involved. The students are giving back, customers are getting a great service at a low price and the money donated is going to a worthy cause,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone involved in making this event our best ever.”

College staff and students also had a chance to enter a raffle to win two gift basket of hair products – each valued at $200 – donated by Joico.
