Environmental groups across Niagara are receiving a $24,886 boost thanks to the Niagara Community Foundation.
John Fisher of Walker Industries is the champion of the Foundation’s Smart & Caring Environmental Legacy Fund for Niagara. Fisher says, “Projects like these not only help build a healthier environment, they benefit all of us by building a happier, more vibrant community. We’re proud to be able to help all of these groups doing this important work for Mother Nature.”
The City of Niagara Falls’ Parks in the City Committee will be receiving $5,062. Committee members, local students and developers will be planting trees along the new Warren Wood Trail, helping to create shade for residents and mitigate storm water surges.
Heartland Forest Nature Experience in Niagara Falls will receive $6,500 to create a new spring program called Frogs, Flight, Turtles and Wetland Sights. The program will include wildlife habitat identification, interactive displays and informative facts.
The Folk Arts Council of St. Catharines – Multicultural Centre in St. Catharines will use its $2,500 grant to work with Links for Greener Learning, in collaboration with Niagara College, to naturalize the terrestrial ecosystem found in Richardson’s Creek and the Green Ribbon Trail.
Niagara College students will use their $3,520 grant to work to engage campus and community members to participate in a ceremonial tree-planting event on campus for Arbor Day and Earth Day 2015, with a focus on community outreach, education and engagement.
City of St. Catharines – Friends of Malcolmson Eco-Park in St. Catharines will receive $2,500 to revitalize the main north-south trail near Cumberland Avenue by filling valleys eroded by cyclists and replanting the area with native shrubs and trees.
Niagara Community Foundation Executive Director Liz Palmieri says, “We’re blessed in Niagara with a stunning natural environment. Helping Niagarans build on what Mother Nature has given us with projects like these is an important part of the Foundation’s mission.”
Created in 2000, the Niagara Community Foundation has raised more than $26 million in endowment funds, where capital is invested, and has granted almost $7 million to charities working in the arts, heritage, environment, social services, health, education, recreation and community development. The Foundation is fully accredited with Imagine Canada’s Standards Program, which is designed to strengthen public confidence in the charitable and non-profit sector.
