The T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificates issued by Niagara College will show the amount of eligible tuition and other fees assessed, not the amount of payments made. Also note that income tax is prepared based on the calendar year and not the academic year.
Not all tuition fees are eligible for deduction according to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Examples of the fees that students cannot claim include:
- Material Fees
- Communicable Disease Screening Fee
- SAC Fee
- College Student Alliance Fee
- Financial Aid Office
- Alumni Fee
- Co-Curricular
- Health Fee
- Installment Fee
- U-Pass (transit) Fee
You will not have a T2202 available if any one of the following is true:
- The course you enrolled in did not start in the applicable tax year. The T2202 tax form is based on the calendar year attended, not on the date tuition was paid.
- You did not pay more than $100 in eligible education fees.
- Your study period did not meet the required minimum length.
- The course does not qualify for a tuition tax credit.
More information on what qualifies can be found through the Canada Revenue Agency website.
You are considered a full-time student only during the months you attend the educational institution. If you attended a class on a part-time basis during a co-op term, the fee and part-time months will show on your T2202 form.
The federal education and textbook tax credits were eliminated in 2017.
To see if you are eligible to claim a provincial or territorial amount, go to Canada.ca/guide-t1-general.
No. The non-refundable public transit tax credit was eliminated June 30, 2017.
If a course taken had dates that fell outside of the tax year, they will be recorded in the year attended.
For example, if a student took an Ontario Learn course in the 2022 Fall Term with a November start date, two months and approximately half of the fees would be recorded on a separate tax slips, for 2022 and 2023. The 2023 tax slip would be available February 2024.
