This fall, Niagara College students, employees and visitors will have more options to charge their electric vehicles at both the Welland Campus and Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Six new EV charging stations were installed at the Welland Campus in Lot G (coming online the week of Sept. 26) in addition to the 14 EV charging stations in Niagara-on-the-Lake in front of the Marotta Family Innovation Complex and behind Residence. The new chargers were made possible thanks to an investment by the College, grant funding from Green Economy Canada, and support from the Niagara College Student Administrative Council in partnership with the STEC fund.
“Through the addition of these new EV charging stations, Niagara College hopes to support community members who own or are considering electric and hybrid vehicles,” said Brian Hughes, acting Senior Director, Facilities Management. “This is one way the College is investing in green technology to make our campuses more sustainable.”
Beginning Sept. 6, the College is implementing tiered pricing for using the EV chargers via the ChargePoint app.
Charging for students is free, although an idle fee is in effect 45 minutes after a full charge. The College developed a tiered pricing structure for students, employees and visitors. Drivers who input their name and student or employee number into the ChargePoint app can access the following pricing:
| User group | Hourly rate | Idle fee |
| Student | Free | $5/hour after 45 minutes of full charge |
| Staff | $1/hour | $5/hour after 45 minutes of full charge |
| Visitor (non-staff/student) | $3/hour | $10/hour after 30 minutes of full charge |
The idle fee applies to any fully charged vehicle following a 45-minute grace period. This is to ensure that spaces are available for those who need it. Drivers are asked to kindly move their vehicle out of the EV charging space once their battery has reached full charge.
Please note that all vehicles including those plugged in to EV chargers must pay to park on campus via the HONK Mobile app.
Fees will contribute to operation and maintenance costs. Pricing will be reviewed annually and is subject to change.
