There’s a cutting-edge new lecture series that will be sure to brighten the smiles of healthcare practitioners in Niagara and beyond.
Niagara College and periodontist / international speaker Dr. Peter Fritz, are unveiling Base Camp – a 12-part evening lecture series poised to advance dental healthcare in Niagara by bringing the latest research and information to the region’s practitioners.
The series will explore topics including the link between periodontal disease and other systemic chronic health conditions, the importance of prevention, surgical and non-surgical treatment options, as well as a brand new system for classification and diagnosis of periodontal disease, which has been shaking up the industry since it was released in June 2018.
“This new education series is unlike anything the Niagara region has seen before. It will advance periodontal care in our education system and communities through a heightened awareness of newly identified international periodontal care parameters,” said Carolyn Triemstra, dean of Niagara College’s Community and Health Studies division. “The series is also a great example of the support Niagara College has from local community leaders. Dr. Fritz is a world-class periodontal expert who generously opens his practice to us, sharing his knowledge and expertise with students and staff from our College’s Dental program.”
“This classification system is the first major update to periodontal disease diagnosis in over 20 years. It is an essential piece of learning for all current and upcoming dental professionals,” said Dr. Fritz, owner of a private specialty practice in Fonthill, Ontario. “The systemic links between periodontal disease and overall health have never been tighter, and it’s important that we, as healthcare providers, understand and collaborate with others to help our patients from every angle.”
Registration is now open for the new series, which is scheduled to begin January 2019 and continue until June 2020. Classes will be delivered in three-hour evening lectures at Niagara College’s Welland Campus – home to its state-of-the-art Applied Health Institute and Dental Clinic which provides dental health services to the community at low cost, and is a ‘living laboratory’ for students in the College’s dental programs.
Base Camp is one of several initiatives launched by the College’s School of Community and Health Services this fall, after receiving $191,000 from the Government of Ontario to increase experiential learning opportunities for students.
