Beer-lovers and brewing professionals in Prince Edward County are set to get a taste of Niagara College’s unique flavour of hands on learning. In conjunction with 555 Brewing Co., the College will offer its popular Brew Academy, a five-day training course on the art of beer-making, from Oct. 29 – Nov. 2.
The course is broken out into five day-long modules, which participants can take individually or in a series. Participants get a crash-course in all aspects of beer-making and brewery operations, including beer-making ingredients and processes, brewery management and marketing, sensory evaluation and more.
Online registration is open now, and is first-come, first-served. The course is open to professionals working in the brewing industry, as well as part-time or home-brewers, and beer enthusiasts. “Brew Academy attracts everyone from brewing professionals looking to sharpen their production, marketing or management practices, all the way down to home-brewers hoping to make a better beer,” said Jeffrey Steen, manager of part-time studies and corporate training at NC’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute.
Hands-on training in an operational brewery, a signature feature of NC’s Expert Edge training offerings, will happen at 555 Brewing Co. in Picton, Ontario.
“We are totally excited about collaborating with Niagara College for Brew Academy. The Prince Edward County beer scene is diverse, with different experiences, different producers and the trials and tribulations of being a rural brewery,” said Natalie Wollenberg, who with her husband Drew, owns and operates 555 Brewing.
Wollenberg was a student in NC’s first run of Brew Academy, offered at the College’s Teaching Brewery at its Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus in the Spring of 2018.
Brew Academy adds to NC’s growing roster of part-time training options already offered in Prince Edward County. In early February 2018, the College launched its Master Taster wine sensory evaluation course in collaboration with Huff Estates Winery in Bloomfield. In early 2018, the College also announced a partnership with the Town of Aurora to offer short-term training in the culinary, beer and wine industries in heart of downtown Aurora, 30 minutes north of downtown Toronto.
“Students in Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute (CFWI) benefit from real, hands-on, in-the-field learning experiences,” said CFWI dean Craig Youdale. “We’re thrilled to offer that unique model of applied education to wine and beer professionals and aficionados in Prince Edward Country and across the province.”
Businesses who enrol employees in NC’s Expert Edge training programs may be eligible for direct financial support to reduce the cost of training. Visit http://www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/eopg/cojg/ for more information.
