On the morning of April 19, at the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake campus, students in NC’s Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program celebrated the successful conclusion of the 2018 Many Hands Project at a special ceremony.
Now in its 21st year, the annual project sees students in the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport support a local community non-profit organization with fundraising, marketing and public awareness of the agency.
This past spring, students in NC’s Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program planned, managed and hosted events to support Community Care St. Catharines and Thorold as well as the College’s Student Administrative Council’s (NCSAC) Nourishing Minds student food bank program.
Event Management students succeeded in raising $16,800 for Community Care and $10,453 for Nourishing Minds through three events.
“The idea behind the Many Hands Project is to provide our students with the opportunity to put the skills and knowledge they develop in the classroom to use in the real world, while at the same time learning the value of community service and leadership,” said Christine Blane, professor and coordinator in the Event Management program.
On March 23, students organized the Soups, Stews and Brews event in support of Community Care St. Catharines and Thorold, where guests enjoyed an evening of soups, stews and craft beers from local restaurants and breweries, live entertainment and a mystery prize wall.
“It was inspiring to watch the students do what they do, to see their enthusiasm and attention to detail. Everyone felt part of something significant,” said Community Care Executive Director Betty-Lou Souter. “It means so much to us, and to the community of Niagara. On behalf of Community Care, thank you for making a difference.”
Two more events followed, Sip & Stretch on April 4, a novel evening that combined yoga with wine, and Spring to the Market on April 8, which featured an interactive market with workshops and demonstrations. Proceeds from both events went to support NCSAC’s Nourishing Minds program.
“My experience in the program has been incredibly rewarding as I have gained so many opportunities to learn in a variety of different ways,” said Event Management student Leah La Sorda,. “Not only did we develop our event management skills in the classroom, but we also utilized these skills in the real world.”
La Sorda was also the recipient of this year’s Many Hands Project Faculty Award. “From volunteering within the industry to planning and executing an actual event, I have learned so much and made so many great connections for the future.”
The success of this year’s Many Hands Project comes during a year of transformation for the Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program. The program recently introduced a new model and curriculum for the project designed to make the biggest impact with resources already on-hand by focusing on smaller projects supporting agencies with their programming.
“I congratulate our students, faculty and staff for the completion of another successful Many Hands project,” said Vivian Kinnaird, Niagara College’s dean of Business, Hospitality and Environmental Studies. “While the scope of the Many Hands Project has evolved, it remains a great Niagara College tradition designed to enhance the lives of people in our community.”

Canadian Tire Bank has demonstrated an incredible commitment to community through their contributions in giving back to the local agencies that the project has supported and all of the Event Management students over the past 21 years.

Event Management is a one-year Graduate Certificate program at Niagara College that prepares graduates for a career in a fast-paced and multi-faceted industry.
