Turtle Naming Contest!
Niagara College’s Daniel J Patterson campus in Niagara-on-the-lake campus is home to many different species of wildlife. One of the species present is the snapping turtle! For more information on turtles and the work Niagara College is doing with them, visit our turtle monitoring website!
In early June, our resident snapping turtles make their way out of the wetlands and onto land to lay their eggs. Staff and students in the Office of Sustainability come in frequent contact with these species, and are asking for your help in naming two of the turtles!
This contest runs until July 1st, where the winners will be contact at the provided Niagara College e-mail address. The winners of the contest will receive 1 (one) $25 gift card to NCSAC food locations on campus.
Turtle one:
About Me: I am a female snapping turtle who is new to the Sustainability Office this year. I am smaller than most of the other snapping rutles you observe laying eggs, which means I am younger.
My favourites: I love spending time in the Indigenous garden, I love loose soil and early mornings
Fun facts: Because I am young, I have less battle wounds than many of the other snapping turtles. My carapace (top of shell) is very ornate.
Turtle two:
About me: I was found travelling by the bus drop off at the main entrance of the Niagara-on-the-lake campus, thankfully the hard work of the staff from careers & advising services, the greenhouse, and the sustainability office, I was relocated to the wetlands so I wouldn’t be hit by a car.
My favourites: I love travelling, being protective of myself, and going for long rides
Fun facts: I have five holes in my carapace, located on the top of my shell. I am also ready to scrap at any moment, protecting myself from things I perceive as a threat.
