Our Story

Niagara College’s definition of sustainability is based on the Bruntland Commission report, created by the United Nations (UN), Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: Our Common Future. Through this report, sustainability and sustainable development is recognized as, “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Shortly after, the Sustainability Committee formed in 2011, with representation from academics, operations, student services, the Student Administrative Council, the student body, and other employees to drive initiatives that focused on improving campus sustainability. Since then, the Office of Sustainability was formed in January 2015 with the intention to continue and develop initiatives on campus and in the community. In 2019 Niagara College published its first institution wide Sustainability Plan, furthering the integration of sustainability across the organization.
