Niagara College acquires lagoons

Strolling beside the old Garden City Raceway sewage lagoons in Niagara-on-the-Lake, pointing out different varieties of birds, Richard Brady is obviously excited about Niagara College acquiring the land.
In a deal approved by the Niagara Region, the college will receive the 18 acres of wetlands and $30,000 for a small piece of land at a pumping station near the Wellandvale campus.
Brady, professor at the College’s Centre for Environmental Training, said the college plans to use the land to teach students in the environmental program the hands-on skills of environmental restoration.
The environmental program at Niagara College is the only one of its size and kind, so the acquisition of the land speaks well for the future of the college and the program, said Brady.
“It enhances the program immensely and continues to build our centre of excellence.”
“We are absolutely thrilled about it,” said Dan Patterson, president of Niagara College. “Hundreds of students will be learning and contributing to the environment.”
