Jan. 19. update:
Both Jan. 19 culinary pop-ups (starting at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.) will support Women’s Place of South Niagara.
A NC culinary pop up to be held on January 19 will raise funds for Women’s Place of South Niagara.
The pop up, featuring a ‘food truck style’ menu, will begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue until 1:30 p.m. or while supplies last (first come, first served) in the Benchmark Dining Room (Daniel J. Patterson Campus, Niagara-on-the-Lake).
Hosted by NC Culinary Services / School of Culinary Arts, food will be prepared by second-year Culinary Management students as part of their CULN1340 class, taught by Chef Professors Olaf Mertens and Scott Baechler.
All sales from the 11:30 a.m. pop up that day will be donated to Women’s Place of South Niagara, which offers support services to those affected by domestic violence. Every year, hundreds of community residents turn to Women’s Place for safe shelter, counselling, 24-hour support lines, legal and housing support, and other compassionate services to help end the cycle of family violence.
Tables will be set up in the Benchmark Dining Room during the pop up. Representatives from Women’s Place will be on site to provide information about their services along with representatives from the Student Rights and Responsibilities Office who will share information about the Consent is Key campaign.
Associate Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities Hafsah Shaikh, who also serves as a Board Director for Women’s Place of South Niagara, approached the School of Culinary Arts with the idea to support the local shelter.
“The Student Rights and Responsibilities Office is excited to be collaborating with the School of Culinary Arts to host NC’s first ever pop-up event for Women’s Place and support their mission to stop abuse and violence against women and children by providing safety through shelter, counselling, education, advocacy and community partnerships,” said Shaikh.
Shaikh noted the importance of supporting the cause.
“Gender-based violence is still a topic not easily discussed by many; however, we know that one in three women experience physical or sexual violence worldwide. In order to end gender-based violence, we must break the silence, speak out, and give our support when we can,” said Shaikh. “As a Board Director at Women’s Place, I can personally attest to the great work carried out by the organization to support women and children impacted by violence.”
The initiative is an example of how Niagara College consistently shows up to care for the community, she said. Shaikh noted that a small donation to Women’s Place will immediately help those impacted by violence rebuild their lives and move forward.
“We value the opportunity to support Women’s Place of South Niagara,” said Sarah Scott, Foodservice Operations Manager for the College’s Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies division. “This upcoming culinary pop-up event on January 19 will give our College community a chance to support a worthy cause, as they enjoy a meal prepared by our culinary students; while our culinary students have an opportunity to sharpen their skills as they give back to the community.”
