Two beers from the Niagara College Teaching Brewery have won medals at the first annual Dublin Craft Beer Cup.
On July 20, the Teaching Brewery’s War of 1812-inspired Butler’s Bitter, and its Brewmaster Series Wheat Beer were announced as silver medal winners at the first annual Dublin Craft Beer Cup. The competition was part of Alltech’s International Craft Brewing and Distilling Conference held in Dublin, Ireland July 18-20.
Craig Youdale, acting dean of Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute, applauded the achievement.
“By entering competitions, our students have an opportunity to see how beers they create at the NC Teaching Brewery compare to some of the best beers in the world,” said Youdale. “Our level of excellence is now being heard throughout the beer industry on an international level.”
Deciding on the best craft beer entries at the competition were some of the brewing industry’s best known and well respected judges (see judge profiles here), including Niagara College Brewmaster professor Jon Downing, who was also a guest speaker at the International Craft Brewing and Distilling Conference.
“It was an honour just to sit at the table and judge beers with them (of course I did not judge our beers!), said Downing. “The whole event was very well done and attended.”
Winning streak
The silver medals were among several recent wins for the NC Teaching Brewery. Earlier this month, the NC Teaching Brewery won three medals at the U.S. Open Beer Championship, including a silver for First Draft Ale (in the English Summer Ale category), and two bronze for Butler’s Bitter (in the Bitter category) and Brewmaster Wheat (in the German Wheat category).
In May, Butler’s Bitter won gold at the Canadian Brewing Awards (in the English Style Pale Ale category) following its gold win at the Ontario Beer Award in April (in the Amber Ale category).
The College’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program was also recognized with a 2013 Gold Program Excellence Award last month from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.
