Christmas comes but once a year, so cue the sugarplums!

Baking and Pastry Arts students are ready to host a Christmas Bake Sale for one morning only at the Canadian Food and Wine Institute.

On Wednesday, December 11, from 9 a.m. to noon, HT 119 (Niagara-on-the-Lake) will be transformed into a holiday bakeshop. An array of holiday treats will be available for purchase – from stollen and pastries, to gingerbread and cookies.

Purchases will be cash only. All the ‘dough’ raised will be donated to help those in need.

The holiday bake sale isn’t only a chance for the College community to pick up delicious treats and support a worthy cause. The icing on the cake – it’s part of an applied learning experience at NC.

Part of the Baking and Pastry Arts program, student participation in the sale is designed to give students a taste of baking retail, and experience with related tasks such as costing and labour.

“The students are making the products as part of their lab,” said CFWI professor Karen Schoenrank, who noted that her 45 first-semester students have been baking for two weeks leading up to the sale to prepare for the event. “It allows students to bake larger quantities, package products for sale.”
