This holiday season just got a lot more cheerful at Niagara College thanks to the Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film students’ annual Rock Around the Clock 24-hour radiothon.
A group of Niagara College BRTF students sacrificed a night of sleep to help their follow students from November 29 at noon and until November 30 at noon during a 24-hour fundraiser. The College’s radio station CRNC The Heat hosted a live broadcast of various specialty shows and various music genres while collecting monetary and canned food donation on at Welland Campus.
“This year at Rock Around the Clock we had lots of student involvement throughout the whole night. There was continuous energy and everyone was excited to be there,” said Sara Meshmesh, third-year BRTF student and CRNC’s program director. “Although it was difficult staying up all night, it’s the people we’ve all grown close to in the past few years in the program that make the event fun and worth it.
“In the end, the money we raised will go to an amazing cause that we very happily support.”
As a result of Rock Around the Clock, representatives from CRNC The Heat will donate about $280 in grocery store gift cards to Niagara College Student Administrative Council’s Nourishing Minds program to be distributed to students in need.

BRTF students present their donation to NCSAC president Ryan Huckla.
“I think this year’s event was a success for two reasons. The students were able to raise awareness and some funds for the Nourishing Minds program while doing a typical real world radio fundraising event,” said Bruce Gilbert, BRTF professor. “Rock Around The Clock is a fundraising endeavour, but it has also blossomed into an annual rite of passage for our outgoing third year department heads. They always want to be better than the last group.”
CRNC The Heat is the campus radio station for Niagara College. Located inside Niagara College’s Welland Campus, The Heat is on-air 24/7. Listen for music, news and information, all presented by Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film students.
