St. Catharines Standard: NC students pick and press fresh crop of icewine grapes

Mike Zettel, reporter for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Advance, covered Niagara College’s icewine harvest, where more than 40 students from multiple programs braved -10°C temperatures to harvest an acre of grapes on Jan. 16.

This year marked the College’s 25th icewine harvest. Since 2000, more than 600 students have taken part in the chilly, early-morning tradition. The article includes an interview with Wine Professor Gavin Robertson, who described the experience as “a rite of passage” and “an extreme form of winemaking.”
