Niagara College beer has won another national accolade, this time at the Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference, which took place May 24-26 in Halifax. The NC Teaching Brewery took home a silver award in the Scotch Ale category for its Beer 101 Strong Ale.
The Canadian Brewing Awards is Canada’s national competition for judging the quality of Canadian manufactured beer. The Canadian Brewing Awards invites Canadian majority-owned breweries of all sizes to compete in a blind tasting determining the best beers in 55 style categories. A Canadian Brewing Award medal is a widely recognized symbol of Canadian brewing excellence.
“I can’t express how proud I am of the team effort of our students with this Silver Medal,” said brewmaster professor Adrian Popowycz. “Winning this prize amidst a group consisting of top tier Canadian Breweries highlights the strengths of NC’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program. It shows that we are indeed teaching the relevant practical skills and habits that will prepare our students to take their place in the brewing industry for years to come.”

Niagara College also hosted a display booth during the three-day conference, during which Associate dean of the School of Food and Wine Sciences, as well as brewmaster professor Adrian Popowycz met many NC Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management grads, now at work in the industry.
We are proud of our role in continuing to support the need for a highly skilled workforce in the beer industry across Canada,” said Torraville. “There has been rapid growth in PEI and Nova Scotia specifically, so we are pleased to see our grads finding employment opportunities there and helping to grow the industry nationwide. Our presence at the conference demonstrates our commitment to the many stakeholders in the industry and provides an opportunity each year to continuously network and build relationships with them all.”
