June is National Indigenous History Month (NIHM), an opportunity to acknowledge and learn about the rich history, culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. It is also a time for Canadians across the country to reflect on reconciliation efforts and to work towards creating a more just and equitable society.

In celebration of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), Niagara College’s Indigenous Education department has been hosting various events for the NC community.

Strawberry Social

For the first time, IE is proud to partner with Hadiya’dagénhahs from Brock University to celebrate Indigenous History Month with a Strawberry Social.

Socials have long been an important way for Indigenous communities to come together in celebration. Traditional social dances–such as the round dance, rabbit dance, and old moccasin–are open to all and meant to be enjoyed by everyone. These are accompanied by social songs, also known as earth songs, which differ from ceremonial songs that are reserved for longhouse gatherings and are part of a closed practice.

We welcome everyone to join us for an evening of shared culture, community, dinner, and drumming. The event will take place on June 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gymnasium at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
