Peyton Moroziuk unearthed a hidden love while attending Niagara College.
Moroziuk, who will graduate from the Community Integration Through Co-operative Education (CICE) Program on June 14, said she wasn’t sure what career path she’d follow before be enrolled at NC.
That is, until she did a co-op placement at a floral shop.
“I discovered an interest in horticulture and my program helped me prepare for my future,” said the Port Colborne resident. “In the fall I will be returning to NC for the Horticultural Technician Program, but for the summer I am working at the flower shop (where) I did my placement.”
It was during a first-semester academic experience that she was first introduced to horticulture. She did a second academic experience in her third semester and realized just how much she enjoyed it.
“I like the plants and how they’re all different,” she said of the hands-on experience.
Her passion for horticulture also impressed her instructors.
“Witnessing Peyton immerse herself in landscape design and plant identification has been truly inspiring,” said Scott Green, CICE Learning Facilitator. “Her unwavering dedication, coupled with her innate talent, has transformed not only her class projects but also her understanding of the intricate balance between artistry and nature. I’m interested to hear about her horticulture passion and how that will unfold in the future.”
Moroziuk also spent time doing co-op placements at the Undergrounds at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus and at Jericho House, a centre that provides opportunities for adults and youth to engage in social and ecological justice, spiritual reflection and leadership education.
“I liked working at the Undergrounds a lot,” she said. “I liked the staff and everyone was really friendly there.”
At Jericho House she was joined by another student from the CICE program, which made the experience enjoyable.
College has also prepared Moroziuk for a career after college.
“It helped me a lot; we had classes that were about how to properly prepare for job interviews and how to make resumes.”
Of the CICE program in general, Moroziuk said she was especially happy about the way she was able to make connections with others and prepare for the working world.
“It’s made me more confident and allowed me to connect with friends from high school that I had lost connection with.”
Moroziuk will enter Horticultural Technician Program part-time in the fall.
