On April 20, Karl Dockstader interviewed Jackie Frail, Associate Dean, School of Community Services to discuss the school’s new project with Heidehof – a well-known seniors care community home in St. Catharines – has been recognized with a provincial industry award for its innovative approach to intergenerational learning and social connection.

When discussing the College’s partnership with Heidehof, Frail mentions, “we’re so fortunate in the School of Community Services to work with such amazing community members with Heidehof being a beautiful example of those collaborations. This was a really unique opportunity that was afforded to us when we were the recipient of the New Horizons Grant offered by the federal government and it allowed us the opportunity to really think differently about how we deliver curriculum, specifically in our Recreation Therapy program.”

Frail elaborated on the unique learning experience provided to students through this partnership. Instead of traditional classroom settings, students had the privilege of engaging in hands-on experiential learning at Heidehof. This immersive approach involved 29 first-year students from NC’s Recreation Therapy program and 10 seniors living at the home in Long-term Care, Supportive Housing and Life Lease units.
