A NC leader continues to go the distance for global biodiversity.
Alan Unwin, Dean of Business and Environment, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to take part in an official Canadian delegation at the United Nations Environment Programme headquarters, from October 15 to 20. The meeting is a follow-up to the UN’s Conference of the Parties (COP 15) in Montreal, which took place in December 2022,.
In December 2022, Unwin was among members of a historic Canadian delegation taking part in the UN’s COP15 , which focused on protecting nature and halting biodiversity loss around the world. The COP15 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) brought together representatives from 196 countries to create targets on biodiversity, to guide global action through 2030 to halt and reverse nature loss. COP15 ended with a landmark biodiversity agreement, the monumental Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework
The October 2023 meeting in Nairobi, Kenya aims to further plans for the implementation of that agreement.
“I feel very privileged and fortunate to have been asked to continue to support the Canadian government’s efforts in follow up to last December’s historic agreement at COP15,” said Unwin. “Agreements are difficult to reach but the real challenge is always on the implementation and strategies that are involved on how the targets and goals will be monitored, measured and tracked including what measure need to be addressed to have the best chance for them to be achieved over a relatively short period of time and across the 194 countries that agreed to them.”
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on the environment.
