Dundas Today profiled NC student-athlete Gerrit Oldejans who was named NC’s 2026 Male Athlete of the Year, as well as one of two MVPs on the college’s men’s soccer team.
In the profile, Oldejans discusses how his time on the field has taught him life lessons, including responsibility and the value of teamwork.
“It’s really validating and nice to see all your hard work over so many years pay off and kind of come to a culmination,” said Oldejans. “This being my final year, I’m out of eligibility, I can’t play soccer at this level ever again, even if I wanted to go back to school. It all just came to this one moment and for me, it’s like, wow.
Frank DeChellis, coach of Niagara College’s men’s soccer team, is quoted in the article:
“Gerrit brought a level [of] maturity to our program at the right time. His work ethic was contagious and his competitiveness noticeable. In every way he helped our program. He was always one of the first to signal his status for training, help organize equipment and say hi’s to everybody on arrival. As a student, he was never a problem and competed with his roommate for top scholastic award every year.”
