NC is continuing its Speaker Series with an event that combines hands-on learning and professional skill-building, this time focused on dining etiquette. Hosted by Sarah Scott, NC Event Specialist with the Community Relations and Events (CRE) team, NC alumna, and hospitality leader, the evening will take place at NC’s acclaimed Benchmark Restaurant, where Scott previously served as manager of dining operations. Students will enjoy a three-course meal while gaining practical etiquette skills that extend beyond the dinner table.

Developed by NC’s Student Engagement team, the Speaker Series brings students together with guest speakers to support personal growth, professional development, and career readiness. Each session offers opportunities to learn practical skills, gain real-world insight, and engage directly with experts in a supportive environment, helping students build confidence and prepare for life beyond college.

For Scott, this dining etiquette event represents a full-circle moment in her career.

“As an NC alumna, an employee, and a hospitality leader, this dining etiquette event feels like a full circle moment in my career,” she said. “I began my journey at Niagara College learning the foundations of professionalism, service, and guest experience; skills that have shaped every step of my career. Now, having the opportunity to share those same principles with current students is incredibly meaningful.”

“The Speaker Series is such an impressive offering to our students,” she added. “Being able to share my knowledge on dining etiquette and help students learn key skills and behaviours expected in professional or formal settings is genuinely special. The tips I share will be practical reminders of the do’s and don’ts of dining.”

The experience blends learning with real-world applications. Students will begin with an introduction to core etiquette principles, from navigating a formal place setting to handling utensils with confidence and managing conversation and body language at the table. Each course during the meal will offer a learning moment, allowing students to practice techniques in real time, whether it’s properly using a napkin, selecting the correct cutlery, or maintaining professionalism during dining interactions.

Scott looks forward to seeing students put these lessons into practice.

“I always look forward to meeting new students and watching their confidence grow as they apply the etiquette skills we explore together,” she said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see these lessons come to life throughout the evening. Students are offered such an incredible opportunity to enjoy a meal at Benchmark while learning professional skills that will serve them well beyond the table.”

Students can expect to learn everything from table manners and business card etiquette to enjoying certain foods, like how to properly enjoy a cupcake, and the importance of a simple ‘thank you.’

“Etiquette isn’t just about knowing which fork to use,” said Scott. “It’s about creating comfort, demonstrating respect, and carrying yourself with confidence. These are the qualities that have shaped my career and allowed me to represent the College and our community with poise. Sharing these principles with students is a full-circle moment, and it’s truly an honour to be part of their journey.”
