Niagara College’s Indigenous Education department is calling on the NC community to donate backpacks in support of displaced youth from Kashechewan Cree Nation, who were evacuated from their homes after a water crisis contaminated the community’s freshwater system.

More than 1000 evacuees are currently being hosted in Niagara Falls while critical repairs are underway. With annual flooding typically affecting Kashechewan in mid- to late April, the community is expected to remain under a long-term evacuation, potentially well into May.

To help students continue their education with stability and dignity, Niagara College is collecting donations of new, unused backpacks so youth can attend school beginning Monday, March 2.

Donations can be dropped off Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at both Indigenous Education Lounges, as well as in Room W213 at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Thank you to everyone who is able to contribute and support these students during this challenging time.
