The Niagara Independent announced that Niagara College is entering the rapidly expanding field of defence robotics with the launch of two new programs that will have students designing and building operational drones for air, land, and sea applications.

The article highlights that the new Defence Systems Engineering Technology (three-year) and Defence Systems Engineering Technician (two-year) programs are built around hands-on, project-based learning rather than traditional classroom instruction alone. From their first term, students will be actively constructing systems, including a ground rover and quadcopter in Term 1, followed by a submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in Term 2.

Niagara College President Sean Kennedy is quoted in the article from a press release, framing the launch as part of the College’s responsibility to align education with national priorities.

“Niagara College is committed to delivering innovative programming that aligns with industry needs,” Kennedy said. “By launching the Defence Systems Engineering Technology programs, we are once again responding to a national call — preparing skilled graduates to work with drone technologies that are increasingly critical to national defence and public safety.”
