Final term Culinary Management (Co-op) student Emma Biro ushered in the month of February in India, proudly representing Canada at the Young Chef Olympiad (YCO). Known as the largest gathering of student chefs on the planet, the annual event was organized by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM). It ran from Feb. 1-6, challenging participants from 50 countries to test their skills while engaging with Indian regional ingredients and traditions.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity that gave me a lot of experience and helped me connect with some of the greatest chefs in the world,” said Biro. “I”m so honoured to have brought Canada into the top 10.”

Following the opening ceremony in Bangalore, Biro – the sole competitor for Canada – faced an intense first round in Pune. Contestants had less than two-and-a-half hours to prepare a fish dish and a vegan dessert. Biro earned a spot as a Top 10 finalist, securing Canada’s place in the grand final in Kolkata on Feb. 6, alongside elite students from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India, Nepal, England, Sweden, Albania, and Switzerland.

At the closing ceremony, Biro was honoured with a Best Mentor Nominee award, voted top competitor by mentors.

“This is such a great example of what Niagara College is all about: supportive, passionate and caring about others,” said Craig Youdale, Dean of Culinary Tourism and Beverage Studies. “I could not be prouder of her.”

“It’s thrilling to watch Emma embark on this incredible journey, enriching her culinary skills on a global stage in India,” said Biro’s mentor Chef Professor Daniel Esposito, who accompanied her to India.

Following the closing ceremony, Biro was congratulated personally by NC President Sean Kennedy via video chat.

“Congratulations to Emma, on behalf of our entire College community, for being such an outstanding competitor, as well as an ambassador for Niagara College and Canada,” said Kennedy. “She has made our NC community tremendously proud.”

The YCO remains a key event for the IIHM, fostering international connections. Niagara College has a long-standing relationship with the IIHM, with many of its graduates choosing to pursue further studies at NC.
