Empowering Indigenous students through Career Month programming at Niagara College

Niagara College's IE department is providing workshops for Indigenous students throughout National Career Month.

November is National Career Month, and Niagara College’s Career Services team is celebrating with a variety of programs and initiatives designed to support students at every stage of their career journey.

This year, Niagara College’s Indigenous Career Consultant, Cathy Smith, is offering specialized programming for Indigenous students to help them prepare for their future careers. These sessions combine practical career preparation, such as resume building and interview skills, with cultural teachings that promote holistic well-being, interconnectedness, and balance across all aspects of life and work. Students will be encouraged to align their skills and experiences with both their personal values and the values of prospective employers.

Professional headshots and resume reviews:
Career Services is partnering with Student Engagement to offer students free professional headshots – perfect for LinkedIn profiles and job applications. Registration is not required.

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus: Nov. 18, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Wellness Lounge)
  • Welland Campus: Nov. 20, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Wellness Lounge)

Medicine Wheel Teachings in resumes, cover letters, interview career planning:
Explore how the Medicine Wheel teachings can guide career planning and personal growth.

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus: Nov. 26, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Room N003 (IE)
  • Welland Campus: Nov. 27, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Room L201 (IE)

Walking in Balance – Goal Setting using the Seven Grandfather Teachings
Students will learn about the Seven Grandfather Teachings – Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery/Courage, Honesty, Humility, and Truth. These can be powerful guides for setting and achieving goals, offering a holistic framework for personal growth and holistic living.

  • Welland Campus: Dec. 4, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Room L201 (IE)
