The Lake Report: NC alumnus editor wins multiple journalism awards

NC alumnus Richard Harley, Editor-in-Chief of The Lake Report is making headlines of his own, as winner of  multiple national awards.

A September 24 post in The Lake Report highlighted the publication’s 13 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards for stories published in 2024.

Harley, who graduated from Journalism  in 2017,  won five awards, including first place for Best National Editorial, and third place for Best Local Editorial.

The Lake Report won six first-place honours, three seconds and four thirds.

The article noted that one of the winning entries, a six-part-series, “Heartbeat of the Harvest” was recognized for Best Rural Reporting. The stories, which ran in September and October 2024, looked at new and old methods employed at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s wineries, and how Niagara College prepares future generations of winemakers and vineyard managers, and the farm workers from Mexico and the Caribbean who are the lifeblood of the industry.
