Smudging is a sacred cultural and spiritual practice shared by many Indigenous Peoples and involves burning medicines such as sage, sweetgrass, cedar, or sacred tobacco. Smudging is part of wellness and ceremonial practices and is protected as an Indigenous right by the Ontario Human Rights Code. We will be testing the fire safety systems in designated areas of the Daniel J. Patterson Campus to determine if smudging triggers any alarms.
While uncommon, the smoke associated with smudging may trigger our alarm systems, so this testing is important for us to better understand how to support the rights of our Indigenous community while not causing undue alarm or concern for others at the College.
