Niagara College’s Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program welcomed current students and alumni to its second annual Steps to Success Transition event at Benchmark Restaurant.
The April 28 event was designed to support the unique transition goals of CICE students and graduates, offering a space for them to practice self-advocacy and social skills while exploring a wide variety of community and college resources. Whether their next chapter involves finding a job or volunteer opportunity, pursuing further education, accessing funding support, or building social and recreational connections, Steps to Success aimed to show participants that they are not alone on their journey.
Twelve Niagara College and community partners participated in the event, offering services and resources across four key areas: education and skills upgrading, employment and volunteer opportunities, financial and funding guidance, and recreational and wellness programs. Participating organizations included Melody Minds, Bethesda, Brock Penguins, Heartland Forest, Developmental Services Ontario, Passport, DSBN Literacy and Basic Skills, NC Academic Advising, NC Alumni Services, NC Academic Upgrading, and Community Employment Services. Printed resources were also provided from Partners for Planning and the Goodwill Building Futures Program.
The impact of these meaningful connections was evident throughout the event. One alumnus gained a better understanding of how to navigate their Passport funding and connect with service providers like Bethesda to help access support. A graduating student also stepped out of her comfort zone by collaborating on a song with Melody Minds founders Pat and Joe. As vendors and attendees cheered on her performance, she walked away with a smile on her face, and a new sense of possibility for discovering interests and building community connections after graduation.
“This event provides a snapshot of the many supports and services available to adults in our community,” said Katrina Frausel, Academic Portfolio Manager with the CICE program. “We hope that everyone who attended left knowing they can continue to learn, grow, and maintain connections after their time in our program.”
Many attendees also appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with CICE staff, while others valued learning about the wide range of services available to them. Above all, the event highlighted that success looks different for everyone, and that NC’s CICE team is committed to helping everyone find the path that’s right for them.
