A small team of students from NC’s School of Business and Management are going the distance to put their skills to the test against teams of university students from around the world.
On April 10, the NC team departed for Budapest where they will compete at the Corvinus Undergraduate Business Experience (CUBE) International Case Competition. To be held April 11-17, the competition drew 16 teams of undergraduate postsecondary students from diverse corners of the globe to showcase their analytical and problem-solving skills in real-life business cases.
“The Corvinus Undergraduate Business Experience (CUBE) is a unique opportunity for Niagara College to showcase the high level of rigour associated with our curriculum, facing off against some very well-known universities,” said Stefan Johnson, International Business Professor and International Business Management Coordinator.
This year’s competition includes The University of Melbourne (Australia), University of Technology Sydney (Australia), HEC Montreal (Canada), Tsinghua University (China), Chinese University of Hong Kong, American University of Beirut (Lebanon), Rotterdam Business School (Netherlands), Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (Netherlands), The Catholic University of Portugal (Portugal), The University of Glasgow (Scotland), and Thammasat Business School (Thailand), Penn State University (U.S.A), Florida State University (U.S.A), and University of Minnesota (U.S.A).
“This diverse and competitive group of universities will provide a basis for our students to perform to the best of their abilities, and a platform for the College to demonstrate our academic and vocational rigour,” said Johnson who travelled to Budapest with the students.
Johnson noted that the cross-cultural experience provides high achieving students an opportunity to showcase skills they gained in classrooms at Niagara College.
Students were selected to compete based on their performance in an internal competition which took place earlier this year. Six students were selected, including the core team – David Dioszegi (second year Business Administration – Marketing), Jill Kosior (third year Business Administration – Marketing), Andrei Melnikov (fourth-year Honours Bachelor of Business Administration – International Commerce and Global Development) and Nazek Kigab (second-year Business Administration – Marketing).
All four students have had success competing at other business competitions this year, which has helped prepare them for CUBE.
Kigab and Melnikov were part of a team of Business students who placed first at the World Trade Centre Buffalo Niagara 2025 International Case Competition, held at the University of Buffalo in March Niagara College students take top spot at international case competition.
Kosior and Dioszegi were part of a NC student team that secured a place in the finals at the Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition in Montreal, February 28-March 2.
Alternates Massiel Jerahmeel Rodriguez Ancajima and Maria Alexandra Enriquez had the opportunity to gain experience while training with the group.
Johnson noted that Professor Terri Champion had a pivotal role in helping the team prepare for CUBE. He was grateful for support from the School of Business and Management including Dean Evan DiValentino, and associate deans James Boesch and Associate Dean April Tyrell.
Teams will compete in three rounds of case competitions, culminating in a final on April 17 where four finalists will present their solutions to a panel of judges to determine the winners.
