Education and awareness met fun and games as Dental Assisting students marked Dental Assistants Recognition Week (DARW).

They hosted lively in-person event in the AHI foyer (Welland Campus) on the morning of March 5 to promote oral health with displays, games and giveaways, along with a social media campaign throughout the week (March 3-9) to help educate, offer advice and acknowledge the essential role of dental assistants.

“This event was a truly meaningful celebration of our profession and the vital role we, as Dental Assistants, play in the world of dentistry,” said Dental Assisting student Ana Janzen. “From the moment you walked into AHI foyer by Dental Clinic, you were greeted by a cheerful sounds. Music was playing, students were laughing and chit-chatting … and some were even dancing.

“Everyone was working together as a team.”

Dental Professor Jennifer Karnay noted more than 40 DA students participated in DARW. Both staff and students from the program are committed to promoting oral health in the community and continually explore new ways to raise awareness and encourage healthy oral hygiene habits.

“We believe a healthy community starts with healthy smiles. That’s why we’re dedicated to raising oral health awareness and promoting practices that lead to better overall health for everyone,” she said.

Karnay added that students benefit from getting involved with DARW.

“This integrated learning experience strengthens their communication and critical thinking abilities, essential for success in the dental practice,” she said.

Held annually during the first week of March, DARW is  designated by the Canadian Dental Assistants Association as a time for the public to recognize members of the profession.

NC’s one-year Dental Assisting program is based at the Welland Campus. Students gain hands on, real-world experience at the NC Dental Clinic which provides dental health services to the College community and the local residents.
