This year marks 10 years since the Niagara College Knight Walkers team first joined the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser walk–a milestone that Team Captain and Hairstyling Professor Joe Abbruscato considers a significant milestone for the College.
“Seeing the growth over the years has been incredible,” said Abbruscato, who first became involved with the fundraiser in 2015. “It’s a wonderful way for our students to complete their volunteer hours while introducing the entire NC community to the importance of giving back and getting involved with local initiatives.”
CNOY is a family-friendly fundraising walk in support of local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. Each year in February, tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home to shine a light of welcome and compassion in their communities.
Since its inception in 2011, the event has raised over $75 million across 190 Canadian communities. Last year, the NC Knight Walkers were the second-largest team in Canada, raising $7,855–surpassing their $5,000 goal. Funds raised go directly to Open Arms Mission, a food bank in Welland that provides food, personal care items, and other essentials to those in need.
“It’s important to get involved because so many people are struggling,” said Abbruscato. “Niagara College is part of the Welland community, and this is an opportunity for us to support our neighbours, friends, and those who are facing challenges, whether due to mental health, financial difficulties, or other hardships. Most of all, it’s about doing good within the community.”
This year, the NC Knight Walkers have set a fundraising goal of $5,000. Abbruscato is encouraging everyone in the NC community to contribute any way they can, even if they can’t physically participate in the walk.
“I’ve always believed in the strength of numbers,” he said. “So, I encourage everyone to join us–whether by walking, donating, or even just spreading the word. We can’t do this without the full support of the College community.”
Ways to Donate
One way the NC community can get involved beyond the walk is through a gift basket raffle organized by NC’s Hairstyling program. The basket, valued at $300, includes hair products, tools, and accessories, with all funds raised going toward the CNOY fundraiser. Stop by The Pavilion (Welland Campus) to make a donation of any amount, and you will receive ballots for a chance to win the basket.
Donations can also be made directly to support the NC Knight Walkers team here.
Event Details
The event will take place on Saturday, February 22, at Niagara College’s Welland Campus. Registration will begin at 3 p.m., with the walk kicking off at 4 p.m. Participants will have the option to walk either a 2.5 km or 5 km route around the campus (map below). After the walk, a reception with food will be held at The Core.
“The reception is always a great time to celebrate the support of our NC Knight Walkers team. It’s a huge hit with all the walkers and brings the community that much closer.”

As the Niagara College Knight Walkers team celebrates 10 years of participation, their continued support and dedication are helping to make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need. Every step taken and every dollar raised brings the team closer to their goal, proving that a decade of commitment truly makes a difference in the community.
“I thank our College community for their ongoing support and know that together, we can achieve another successful year in raising funds and awareness for this important cause,” said Abbruscato.
