This March, Niagara College’s Student Engagement Leadership Exploration and Development LEAD program and EDI and Accessibility are co-hosting a special screening of the documentary Beyond Their Years – an inspiring film about sports and social justice icons Herb Carnegie and Buck O’Neil – followed by a thoughtful panel discussion.

Taking place on March 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Yerich Auditorium at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, this free event will highlight the importance of making the world a more inclusive and welcoming place.

Beyond Their Years depicts the compelling story of parallel lives lived by sports and social justice icons Herb Carnegie (hockey) and O’Neil (baseball), who were excluded, because of their race, from competing at the highest professional leagues of the sports they loved. Instead of becoming angry and bitter, they channeled the injustice they both experienced into pioneering work that made their respective sports, and the world, more inclusive. The 48-minute film, that features dozens of interviews and rare footage, ties together their legacies in a verité style that teaches, heals, and humanizes.

Following the screening, a special panel discussion will take place. The panel will include:

  • Bernice Carnegie, Speaker, Author, Storyteller and daughter of Herb Carnegie.
  • Rane Carnegie, OHL alumnus and grandson of Herb Carnegie.
  • Rico Phillips, OHL Director of Culture and Community.

Registration is required.
