Staff and faculty from NC’s School of Environment and Horticulture have planted a seed for a new way to honour the memory of a beloved colleague and grow her College legacy.
The School has established the Jill English Memorial Bursary, which will help support students within the School of Environment and Horticulture for years to come.
News of English’s passing on February 1 has shaken the College community, where she was a long-time member of staff and faculty – and a dear friend to many.
“The recent loss of Jill has affected our students, staff and faculty immensely and, although we knew it all along, it has become very apparent that she was deeply loved by everyone for her compassionate care for the students (particularly those in the Schools she advised to), and all staff and faculty she dealt with regularly,” said Sandy Herkimer, Work-Integrated Learning Coordinator, School of Environment and Horticulture.
“We will always remember her calming voice, her friendly smile, and her love of the NC clothing from our programs as she truly was an NC Champion and proudly represented her students and employer by wearing her beloved hoodies.”
English’s roots at NC run deep. She dedicated 20 years of her career as a member of NC staff after joining the College’s Continuing Education department in 2005, and more than 15 years as a part-time member of faculty; most recently, she was an Academic Advisor (School o f Academic and Liberal Studies, and School of Environment and Horticulture), and Professor in the School of Academic and Liberal Studies.
“We think Jill would have loved to be part of ‘giving back to the students’ as her legacy at NC,” said Herkimer.
