Reminder: Black History Month events include poetry slam, pop-up market and learning sessions

This February, Niagara College is honouring and celebrating the legacy of Black culture and contributions more broadly with events and activities for Black History Month in Canada.

Students and employees alike are invited to join the College as we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and African diasporic peoples, acknowledging their unique lived experiences, their resiliency, and the many challenges and injustices they still face today.

Feb. 4:

1 to 2 p.m. CCDI Webinar: Black History Month – Panel

This webinar for employees delves into the distinction between commemoration and memorialization of Black History Month, exploring how Black history is not just a past to be remembered, but a presence that shapes culture, activism, and legacy. This session invites employees to engage with leaders in the field, reflecting on how we can honor Black history every day, beyond February. Register here.

Feb. 13:

1 to 2 p.m. ‘Words that Heal’ Poetry Slam Experience @ DJP Campus in room N018

This dynamic slam poetry workshop is open to students and employees, and is designed to ignite your creativity and foster connection. In this hour-long session, participants will dive into the exhilarating world of slam poetry, where words come alive through rhythm, movement, and expression. No prior experience is necessary, and there’s no obligation to share your work unless you want to. Register here.

Feb. 20:

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Winter Pop-up Market @ the Welland Campus

In partnership with Black Owned 905, NCSAC, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Community Relations and Events are hosting a Winter Pop-Up Market featuring student and community vendors at the Welland Campus.

The market will be a chance for the NC community to celebrate and support Black-owned businesses and budding student entrepreneurs from across the region.

March 20:

10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Community Art Project Unveiling

Join us at the Welland Campus Learning Commons for the unveiling of a community art project to celebrate the United Nation’s (UN) Decade of African Descendants co-created by black students and employees with local artist Nadine Williams. Registration is not required.
